Unable to connect the Search Services

I’ve already setup the environment correctly base on the Technet guide.

The farm topology is 1 WFE, 1APP (which runs the Search Service Instance), 1 SQL and 1 Fast Search server.

This error happen after few months of system commission.

Whenever hitting a keyword via the Search Box, this error “Unable to connect the search services” kept throwing.

After checking the server system time, i noticed that there is 5++ mins difference between APP Server and Fast Search Server. This time difference will cause the web service call to fail!!

Hence, please ensure that your Search Service Instance server and the FAST Search are in synch with the time. I’ve heard that there is this NTP for servers to synch up the time. You may explore it in detail yourself =)

A SharePoint Server 2013 workflow goes into a canceled state when you start an existing SharePoint Server 2010 workflow

I’ve stumbled across this error when running  custom SharePoint 2013 Workflow which triggers another SharePoint 2010 List Workflow.

as shown.

Workflow Internal Canceled Status SP 2013

Argument Null Exception was due to Parameter that was passing in is null.

The workaround suggested by MS is to set a Workflow Variable and trigger the SP2010 Workflow using your created Workflow Variable.

Error were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot be run

When publishing a custom workflow using SharePoint Designer 2013. This error thrown.

SharePoint Designer 2013 - Publish Workflow Error - Error Found when compiling

Checked Central Admin > Manage Service Application. The “App Management Service” is started. (weird)

Checked the “Configure service application associations”,  “App Management Service” is already associated.

Then i checked the “Manage Services on server” and noticed that the “App Management Service” is STOPPED.

Start the “App Management Service” and now the workflow can be published with no error!

  4. Started User Profile service
  5. Started Sync service

  1. Go to IIS (Internet Information Services) Manager

Windows 8 Release Preview on VMWare Your PC needs to restart

Happily having Windows 8 Release Preview version iso downloaded, and i came across this problem when trying to create a new virtual machine using VMware Workstation.

Your PC needs to restart. Please hold down the power button. Error code 0x0000005D

This problem is due to your BIOS setting is not setup properly to run the VM.

For my case, I’m using HP ProBook 4310. Below are the steps to solve this problem

1) Reboot PC and press F10 to go to BIOS Configuration page.

2) Enable “Data Execution Prevention” (some motherboards name this option as “No-Execution Memory Protection“)

3) Save the changes and restart the PC.

Restore-SPFarm stop and hang

Came into this problem when i was trying to restore my sp farm (spfarm) for my sharepoint server

Tried the following command:

Restore-SPFarm -Directory \\SPServer\Farmbackupfolder -RestoreMethod Overwrite

The script somehow stop and hang as shown in below

Hang and stop Restore -SPFARM

After checking my backup folder, the sprestore.log was created and the content looks  something like this and it has been idle for few hours!

[10/23/2012 11:38:47 AM] Verbose: Starting object: Shared Services.
[10/23/2012 11:38:47 AM] Verbose: Starting object: Shared Services Applications.

[10/23/2012 11:38:48 AM] Verbose: [Access Services] Restored the service application administration acl.

After checking the backup folder, i noticed that the my service account (spservice) account does not have access to the shared folder. OMG!

Without further ado, i kindly granted the permission and rerun the restore-spfarm command

Cannot create SharePoint Service Application in Central Admin

  1. Ribbon for Creating new Managed Service Application / Delete Service Application is disabled, despite login as System Account to SharePoint Central Administration Page.
  2. Manage Services on Server is missing from Central Administration > Application Management page

  1. The solution is fairly simple, Right click your Internet Explorer (IE) and Run as Administrator

Event ID 3760 – SharePoint Foundation – SQL Database not found

SQL Database 'YOUR DATABASE_FOLLOWED BY GUID' on SQL Server instance 'YOUR INSTANCE' not found.
Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.

Cannot open database "YOUR DATABASE_FOLLOWED BY GUID" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'YOUR USER ACCOUNT'.

After checking the SQL, i noticed that the database is not even exist in my database server. I suspect that the previous deleted service application jobs did not clean up properly. To get rid of this 3760 Critical error. Simply Execute the following powershell script.

Note: This script will delete all your non-existing databases. Please do a backup before executing it

Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.Powershell
$dbs = Get-SPDatabase | Where {$_.Exists -eq $false}
$dbs | ForEach-Object { $_.Delete()}

The error is now gone =)

My resolution is to perform IISRESET at SharePoint Web Front  End server. Now the scorecard will not intermittently  not showing scorecard indicators. =)
